Teacher by Day....Party Girl by Night.

Monday was a very interesting day!

It started out with me going to school
for my first day of substitute teaching. The kids' regular teacher went back to the States for Thanksgiving. So, for this week and next I will be teaching language arts, math, and reading (in English of course!). Most of the day went well, but the teacher made some page number mistakes on his lesson plans....that made it slightly difficult. There are 7 kids in the class and it's multi-grade. For instance, at one point in the mornings I am teaching 5th grade language arts, 3rd grade math, and 4th grade math all at the same time!

Here's where things get really good.....My friend Nelly (who translated for me when I was here in May 2007) asked me to go out to dinner with her and some friends for her birthday. So, I took a marshuka downtown--and thanks to a nice man--got off at the right place. I met Nelly and her friends and we went to a pizza/karaoke restaurant called Mama Mia. So, we had pizza and for about the next 3 hours I listened to Armenian and Russian karaoke. They insisted that I sing....so I chose ABBA's "Mama Mia" and "The Sign" by Ace of Base. (wouldn't you choose the same?!?)
After declining a glass of wine for the birthday toast, I thought it would inappropriate to sing "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks. I'm glad I got to celebrate Nelly's birthday, but it was wasn't exactly the best atmosphere for talking and getting to know each other. Needless to say, I came home exhausted, smelling like smoke, and very amused at the whole thing! What a night!

Tomorrow I substitute teach and I will also go to the village to teach my 2nd ESL lesson...sorry kids, no M&Ms this time.

Sounds like the substituting is fun. Always be flexible and "wing it". I'm glad you get to go to the village this week, also. You could show them an object and see what they would like to say about it (the name of it, what does it do, what does it look like). Would you want to try rhyming words? Course, there's not much comprehension there. What a fun birthday party. Wish I could have seen and heard you doing karaoke. Keep writing blog entries. They are so descriptive. !!!

That story cracks me up every time I hear (read) it. It's good to see that you are building relationships with people in a way that they want you to be part of their lives. That's such a big part of leading them to God's love.
I still think that you need to make your lessons Thanksgiving themed on Thursday. Math would be the fun one:
43 Pilgrims x 67 Turkeys = 2881 Pilgurkeys.

Yes, yes...the "Party Girl" has been at the top of my prayer list...I have lived with you and know how crazy you can get..lol...what an experience...may I just say that I can visualize some of the faces you were dying to make...but most likely held most of them in :)! Well...even though there were some aspects of the evening were ummmm...interesting...you are living life with the people- and that is a missionary, and I am sure your actions and decisions will be impactful. Love you
