Working Girl

I'll be starting my 3rd week at my new job on Monday. Yes, it's been busy, so I'm just now getting around to blogging much about it.

I'm teaching English as a Second Language to international students. It's an intensive language course that will prepare students to make a good grade on their TOEFL (Test of English Language Fluency), which will allow them to enter an American university. Each "session" is 4 weeks long and we move through the material like there's no tomorrow. (Which would actually make knowing English irrelevant. I digress.)

Anywho, right now, I'm teaching 2 hours of grammar, one hour of idioms, one hour of reading, and one hour of writing. Most of my students are from Saudi Arabia, but I have one Japanese student and one Korean student. There are already a lot of cultural lessons to learn, which makes it interesting. It's an interesting job, but takes a lot of hard work, too. I'm trying to get into the rhythm of lesson planning and grading.

I feel like I have a sympathetic heart towards my students since I know how it feels to live in a strange place learning a strange language. I try to speak clearly and make sure they get as much help as I can give them, while also making them do the homework and take the tests.

Until I know where God is leading me next, this is a good job. I get to do something I did in Armenia, be with internationals, and pray for specific people who don't know Him.

It's amazing when you write it down... teach ESL, be with internationals, pray for those that you teach... it sounds ike a perfect job -- not for forever but great for now. It confirms again your interest in working with internationals.

When you began the job, I thought youwere teaching ESL to the very beginning students. Now, it sounds like jr. high or high school English. No wonder you have homework! Plus, being the person you are, you are a diligent and caring teacher!
